The Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) has called on Parliament not to betray teachers by ensuring that their petitions on salary disparities are handled to their satisfaction.
This call was made by UNATU’s Secretary General, Filbert Baguma, while appearing before Parliament’s Joint Committee on Education and Public Service.
Baguma was addressing the committee during the consideration of the petition concerning salary disparities and the enhancement of arts teachers’ salaries to match those of science teachers.
Baguma informed the legislators that UNATU had suspended its industrial action to allow room for negotiations and expressed hope that they would not be let down by Parliament’s response.
He emphasized that the union had shown good faith by halting the strike, and they now expected concrete steps toward resolving the issue.
Earlier this month, UNATU had agreed to suspend its industrial action following the intervention of Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.
Among tasked the Education and Public Service committees to urgently address the matter.
The State Minister for Public Service, Grace Mugasa, informed the committee that an agreement had been reached with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders during a meeting at State House.
According to Mugasa, the salary enhancement would be implemented in a phased manner.
However, the committee was unable to make significant progress during the meeting as the Ministry of Finance was absent.
The meeting was subsequently adjourned to the following day, October 30, 2025.
