The Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed Bin Al-Maktoum, through Haba Na Haba Food Bank, has today launched the “1 Billion Meals” campaign, set to benefit over 1.7 million vulnerable people across Uganda.
The donation, worth USD 142,000, provides each beneficiary with a package containing 5kg of rice, 5kg of maize flour, 1kg of beans, 1 litre of packed milk, cooking oil, and other essential food items.
The launch was officiated by Jessica Bagenda, CEO of Haba Na Haba Food Bank, at St. James Bbiina Catholic Parish in Nakawa Division, Kampala.
The campaign will reach vulnerable communities in Kampala, Iganga, Budaka, and Wakiso, with distribution coordinated through various charity and refugee organizations.
Bagenda highlighted that while Uganda is rich in agricultural potential and human capital many people still face hunger, chronic malnutrition, and food insecurity.
She emphasized that through partnerships with local farmers, food producers, market vendors, and logistics networks, the organization has been able to rescue, procure, donate, and deliver nutritious meals to vulnerable households, school feeding programs, and low-income urban communities, while also reducing food waste and loss.
She thanked the government for its support and urged the authorities to enact policies that facilitate, rather than hinder, their efforts.
Bagenda reaffirmed Haba Na Haba Food Bank’s commitment, stating: “No child should sleep hungry, no family should feel forgotten, and no nation should be left behind.”
