PELUM Uganda Urges Government to Approve National Agro-Ecology Strategy Ahead of 2025 Week of Action

PELUM Board Chairperson Dr. Christopher Kyeswa

Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Uganda has renewed calls for the government to urgently approve the National Agro-Ecology Strategy as the country prepares for Agro-Ecology Week of Action 2025.

The organization says the policy is critical for guiding reforms and resource allocation toward sustainable agriculture.

PELUM Uganda’s Program Manager for Advocacy, Moses Onen, noted that Uganda has lagged behind its neighbors, Kenya and Tanzania, which have already adopted their agro-ecology strategies.

He stressed that Uganda’s draft strategy, first developed in 2014 and later rejected in 2023, is essential for directing institutions on how to support agro-ecological farming systems.

Board Chairperson Dr. Christopher Kyeswa said this year’s Agro-Ecology Week, scheduled for 7th July 2025, will focus on accelerating agro-ecological transitions through policy, markets, finance, and practice.

The event is expected to attract over 1,500 participants, including smallholder farmers, private sector actors, researchers, cultural groups, and policymakers.

Activities will feature exhibitions, policy dialogues, business clinics, and cultural food fairs, culminating in celebrations marking PELUM Uganda’s 30th anniversary.

The organization said the events aim to strengthen partnerships and promote resilient, sustainable food systems across the country.
