Uganda’s Judiciary Urged to Embrace Technology in Tackling 13,400+ Case Backlog

Uganda’s judicial officers have been urged to embrace technology to address the ongoing backlog of over 13,400 cases within the judicial system.

This call was made by Deputy Chief Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija during a five-day judicial training session in Entebbe, organized by the Judicial Training Institute (JTI) in collaboration with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).

Dr. Zeija highlighted the urgent need for technological integration, noting that as of now, there are 13,474 pending cases at the Court of Appeal and an additional 900 at the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court Justice Mike Chibita, who also chairs the Judiciary’s governing council, emphasized the importance of the training, describing it as a vital program to ensure the consistency and effectiveness of the judicial system.

The training, which began on recently aims to support the newly appointed justices of the Court of Appeal, facilitating their smooth transition into appellate roles while promoting greater teamwork within the court.
