At least five women have been nominated to contest for the Wakiso District Woman MP seat as the Electoral Commission’s parliamentary nomination exercise continues at the district headquarters.
Among those cleared on the second day of nominations are Naluyima Bethel of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Beth Kayesu Nankunda of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), and independent candidate Irene Mpamulungi.
Two additional candidates were also nominated, bringing the total to five.
The Electoral Commission is currently conducting nominations for various constituencies in the district, including Entebbe Municipality, Nansana Municipality, Kira Municipality, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, and the Wakiso District Woman MP position.
After her nomination, NUP’s Naluyima pledged to tackle key issues affecting residents, including the rampant land grabbing in Wakiso, inadequate healthcare, and declining education standards.
Independent candidate Irene Mpamulungi, meanwhile, vowed to advocate for the establishment of a fully-fledged Ministry for Wakiso District, citing its large population, rapid urbanisation, and extensive public infrastructure that demands special administrative focus.
Other candidates nominated on the day include Joyce Nabatta Namuli (NUP), Shaka Steven (NRM), DePaul Kayanja (Democratic Party), and Michael Kakembo Mbwatekama (Democratic Front), all contesting for the Entebbe Municipality seat.
The nomination exercise continues as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.
