The opposition Democratic Front (DF) party has announced it will not field a presidential candidate in the 2026 general elections, citing the absence of meaningful electoral reforms as a key reason.
Speaking to journalists at the party’s headquarters in Mengo today, DF President Mathias Mpuuga said Uganda cannot hold free and fair elections under the current system.
He attributed the party’s decision to step back from the presidential race to deep-rooted unfairness in the electoral process.
Mpuuga highlighted the commercialization of politics as one of the biggest obstacles to credible elections, arguing that it allows wealthy but incompetent individuals to rise to power while undermining merit and democratic values.
Despite opting out of the presidential contest, Mpuuga affirmed that the Democratic Front will actively participate in parliamentary and local government races.
He emphasized the party’s strategy to push for electoral reforms from within Parliament.
He also revealed that the DF will fully sponsor its parliamentary candidates, including covering nomination fees, as part of its commitment to removing financial barriers for aspiring leaders.
