His Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala has officially re-commissioned a newly renovated auditorium named in his honor at Uganda Martyrs University (UMU), Nkozi, during the university’s 31st graduation ceremony.
The event celebrated the achievements of 2,404 graduates, including five PhD recipients.
Originally constructed in 2003 to host university functions, the upgraded Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala Auditorium now accommodates 208 people. Despite the enhancements, conference chairs remain pending release by the Uganda Revenue Authority.
UMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Kyamanywa, praised the auditorium as a space to “build great minds.”
Cardinal Wamala was joined by several distinguished guests, including Rt. Rev. Joseph Anthony Zziwa, Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, Bishop Joseph Eciru Oliach, and other religious and academic leaders.
The ceremony also marked the official launch of UMU’s ambitious $2.7 million (UGX 8 billion) Science Hub, spearheaded by chief guest Gloria Evelyn Byamugisha, Group Chief HR Officer at Dangote Cement PLC.
Byamugisha described the project as vital to Uganda’s advancement in medicine, engineering, agriculture, and digital literacy—now “human rights like Wi-Fi.”
She and her husband pledged UGX 31 million in honor of the university’s 31st graduation.
She called for collaborative support from telecom companies, banks, government ministries, and President Yoweri Museveni, emphasizing the hub’s potential to shape Uganda’s future.
The Science Hub is set to be built behind the current university structures, with a target completion date before the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) deadline.
