Justice Minister Blames Defense ‘Drama’ for Delays in Besigye Treason Trial

Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao

The Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, has expressed frustration over the prolonged delays in the treason trial of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Obeid Lutale, attributing the setbacks to what he described as ongoing “drama” in the courtroom.

Besigye and Lutale, who were arrested in Kenya on November 16, 2024, have been facing treason charges in a case that has seen limited progress nearly a year later.

Speaking to the media, Mao criticized the defense team for allegedly employing diversionary tactics that have led to repeated postponements.

He said the legal process had been turned into a “comedy,” with the defense offering various excuses whenever the case was brought before the court.

Mao further stated that public frustration was being unfairly directed at judges, state attorneys, and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), even though the delays were, in his view, caused by the defense.

The office of the DPP, led by Jane Frances Abodo, has maintained that it is fully prepared to proceed with the trial.

However, continued adjournment requests and legal maneuvers from the defense have significantly hampered progress.

Meanwhile, DPP Abodo has urged prosecutors to work toward faster resolution of cases. She emphasized that the timely delivery of justice was essential for maintaining public confidence, national security, and an environment conducive to investment.

The court has yet to announce a new date for the trial.
