High Court Halts Uganda Law Society AGM Over Council Legitimacy Dispute

The Supreme Court of Uganda has overturned earlier court decisions in a 20-year land

The Kampala High Court has issued a restraining order temporarily halting the Uganda Law Society (ULS) from holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM), which had been scheduled for this Saturday at Imperial Resort Beach Hotel in Entebbe.

In a ruling delivered today, Justice Bernard Namanya barred all ULS members and officials from convening the AGM until further notice from the court.

The court also prohibited the implementation of any resolutions passed during a previous general meeting held on 17th September 2025 at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

The decision comes amid ongoing legal disputes surrounding the legitimacy of the current ULS Council, which is being challenged in Civil Appeal No. 98 of 2025.

The appeal contests an earlier ruling by Justice Musa Ssekaana, who had declared the current ULS Council unlawfully constituted.

Justice Namanya stated that proceeding with the AGM could result in irreversible consequences, particularly with regard to the election of ULS nominees to the Judicial Service Commission, a constitutionally mandated body responsible for advising the President on judicial appointments.

The court has scheduled a further hearing for October 20, 2025, during which it will continue examining the legal standing of the ULS Council and the broader implications of its recent actions.
