Norbert Mao Urges Opposition to Embrace Dialogue Over Division

Norbert Mao

The President General of the Democratic Party and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, has strongly criticized elements within the opposition and political opportunists for misleading their supporters and resisting efforts aimed at national dialogue and reconciliation.

Speaking to journalists at the Democratic Party headquarters in Mengo, Kampala, Mao expressed concern that some opposition leaders are more focused on preserving personal power and influence than pursuing a peaceful, democratic transition in Uganda.

He cautioned that this approach risks entrenching divisions and prolonging cycles of political conflict.

Mao underscored the critical role of dialogue in achieving lasting peace and unity, warning that those who reject such initiatives often do so out of self-interest, rather than a genuine desire to advance the country’s future.

He also defended the National Unity Platform’s decision to engage in the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD), urging the public not to vilify the move.

According to Mao, participating in dialogue should not be seen as a betrayal of political principles but as a necessary step toward mutual understanding and the development of practical solutions to Uganda’s challenges.

Looking ahead, Mao emphasized the urgency of comprehensive constitutional reforms, which he said are essential for addressing long-standing governance issues.

He highlighted the restoration of presidential term limits, the reduction of administrative units and the size of Parliament, and a deeper decentralization of power as key reforms needed to promote national stability and enhance democratic governance.

Such changes, he argued, would not only strengthen institutions but also improve service delivery and help rebuild public trust in the political system.
