Police Officer Remanded Over Viral Assault Video of Petrol Station Attendant

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clive Nsiima has been remanded to Luzira Prison

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clive Nsiima has been arraigned and remanded to Luzira Prison on charges of assault and malicious damage after a viral CCTV video showed him slapping a female petrol station attendant in Kyanja.

The incident, which occurred on October 7, 2025, sparked national outrage after the footage circulated widely across social media platforms.

In the video, ASP Nsiima is seen assaulting the woman after she reportedly asked him to pay for items he had taken.

The public backlash led to his immediate arrest and detention last week by the Uganda Police Force.

On Monday, Nsiima appeared before Senior Principal Grade One Magistrate Nicholas Aisu at City Hall Court in Kampala.

His lawyer, Hamaza Kyamanywa, informed the court that the complainant, Pellan Atuhumuriize, had since reconciled with the accused and had filed an additional statement to that effect.

Counsel Kyamanywa requested bail for his client, but State Prosecutor Mercy Yamangusho objected, stating that she had not yet reviewed the sureties presented.

She further argued that the nature of the charges violence against a woman was especially concerning given that the accused is a law enforcement officer, whose duty is to protect citizens and uphold the law.

Yamangusho emphasized that the case had become a matter of public interest, given its viral nature and the widespread reaction from the public.

She told the court that the accused’s actions amounted to a blatant display of impunity, and the court must send a strong message by denying bail, to reassure the public that justice is being served.

The magistrate remanded ASP Nsiima to Luzira Prison until October 16, 2025, when a ruling on his bail application is expected.
