UNATU Urges Government to Honor Promises Instead of Issuing Threats

Speaking at the Uganda Media Centre, Minister of Public Service Muruli Mukasa

The Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) has called on the government to address their longstanding demands rather than resort to intimidation tactics.

Teachers, represented by UNATU, have been on strike for the past three weeks in protest against the government’s failure to fulfill its three-year-old pledge to enhance their salaries.

Speaking at the Uganda Media Centre, Minister of Public Service Muruli Mukasa issued a stern ultimatum, warning teachers to return to class within a week or face legal consequences.

In response, UNATU General Secretary Filbert Baguma criticized the government’s approach, urging officials to engage with teachers’ concerns instead of issuing threats. He emphasized that teachers have shown patience for years, but their goodwill has not been met with meaningful action.

“The government should focus on fulfilling its commitments, not punishing those demanding what was promised,” Baguma stated.
