Kanyanya Court Denies Bail to 10 NUP Leaders, Citing Ongoing Investigations and Unqualified Sureties

Kanyanya Court Denies Bail to 10 NUP Leaders

The Kanyanya Magistrates Court has once again denied bail to ten leaders and supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP), citing failure to meet the legal requirements for temporary release.

Among the accused are prominent figures within the party, including NUP Deputy Spokesperson and Nakawa MP aspirant Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, Principal of the NUP School of Leadership Doreen Kaija, Edward Ssebufu alias Eddie Mutwe, Achileo Kivumbi, Sauda Madada, Calvin Tasi alias Bobi Giant, Edwin Sserunkuma aka Eddy King Kabejja, Sharif Lukenge, Yasin Nyanzi, and Tonny Kawesi.

The group faces charges of unlawful drilling, conspiracy to commit a felony, and other related offences.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Damalie Aguma-Asiimwe said the accused could potentially interfere with ongoing investigations if released on bail.

She further noted that most of the sureties presented were fellow NUP leaders, raising concerns about the likelihood of them shielding potential witnesses, many of whom are also reportedly affiliated with the party.

According to Ugandan law, a substantial surety must be a person of recognized integrity, with a known residence, a stable occupation, and sufficient standing to ensure the accused complies with bail conditions.

Defense lawyer Samuel Muyizi described the court’s reasons as unjust and politically influenced.

He stated that his legal team would consider an appeal after consulting with the accused.

Meanwhile, state prosecutors requested a full month to conclude investigations, which are still ongoing.

The case has been adjourned to October 24, 2025.
