Government Issues 7-Day Ultimatum to Striking Arts Teachers

Speaking at the Uganda Media Centre, Minister of Public Service Muruli Mukasa

The Government of Uganda has issued a strict 7-day ultimatum to Arts teachers currently on strike, directing them to return to class or face disciplinary action, including possible dismissal.

The strike, led by the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU), began on 15th September, with Arts teachers demanding a significant salary increment to match the pay of their Science counterparts.

Speaking at the Uganda Media Centre, Minister for Public Service Hon. Muruli Mukasa reiterated the government’s call for teachers to resume duties immediately.

He warned that any teacher who fails to comply with the ultimatum will be considered to have abandoned their job, and will be subject to administrative action.

“To ensure compliance,” the minister said, “District Education Officers, Resident District Commissioners, and Town Clerks have been instructed to monitor public schools and report non-compliance.”

Minister Mukasa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing salary disparities, stating that Arts teachers will be considered for salary enhancement in the 2026/27 financial year.
