Police Bust Motor Vehicle Spare Parts Theft Ring in Kampala, Six Arrested

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson

In a significant breakthrough in the fight against motor vehicle spare parts theft, police in the Nateete Division have arrested six suspects believed to be part of a criminal network involved in the illegal sale and distribution of stolen oil and fuel filters.

The arrests followed a tip-off regarding individuals selling brand-new vehicle filters under suspicious circumstances. In response, police launched targeted operations across multiple areas, including Sauri Yako, the City Centre, Ndeeba, and Bwaise.

The first phase of the operation resulted in the arrest of Frank Mumbia and Eddy Byesigwa, who were found in possession of stolen vehicle parts.

During their interrogation, the two provided key information that led to the discovery of a wider network involved in the trade of stolen motor vehicle components.

Subsequent investigations and follow-up operations led to the arrest of four more suspects: Lawrence Ssebina from Nateete, Frank Kateregga from Bwaise, Muhammed Zziwa from the City Centre, and Dorothy Nalongo Nabankema from Ndeeba.

All six are currently in custody as inquiries continue.

During the coordinated raids, police recovered a total of 422 Renken oil filters of various sizes, believed to have been stolen from local suppliers and automotive workshops.

The recovered items have been documented and securely stored at the Nateete Police Stores, pending further investigation.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango confirmed the development and emphasized the force’s commitment to cracking down on organized theft rings.

He noted that the arrests mark a major step toward curbing the illegal trade of vehicle spare parts, which has become a growing concern for both motorists and legitimate auto businesses.

The suspects are expected to face charges related to theft and possession of suspected stolen property once investigations are complete.
