Minister Kabyanga Signals Imminent Political Transition Within NRM Ahead of 2026 Elections

State Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Godfrey Kabyanga Baluku

State Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Godfrey Kabyanga Baluku, has revealed that a political transition within Uganda’s ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), is already in motion and nearing completion.

Speaking during the Youth Peace Ambassadors’ Workshop at the United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFRI) in Naguru, Kampala, Kabyanga stated that internal preparations for leadership change began some time ago and are now in their final stages.

“These processes have been ongoing quietly. The transition is essentially done,” Kabyanga said, adding that there should be no expectation of a sudden or dramatic shift in leadership.

He hinted that the party already knows who will take over, though he did not name any specific individual.

Using metaphorical language, the Minister suggested that while some people are oblivious to developments within the party, those deeply involved in national affairs are already aware of the direction the NRM is heading.

Kabyanga’s remarks are among the clearest indications yet that the NRM is actively managing a succession plan ahead of the 2026 general elections, a topic that has increasingly dominated Uganda’s political landscape.

President Yoweri Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986, has not publicly declared whether he intends to run again in 2026.

His silence has fueled ongoing speculation and debate about the future leadership of both the country and the ruling party.
