NUP Vetting Committee Urges Candidates to Uphold Confidentiality and Maturity During Internal Elections

Chairperson of the Electoral Management Committee Harriet Chemutia

The Chairperson of the Electoral Management Committee (EMC) of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), Harriet Chemutia, has called on party candidates undergoing the vetting process to maintain strict confidentiality regarding the internal workings of the committee.

Speaking at a press conference held today at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, Chemutia noted that the vetting exercise, which began yesterday, is proceeding smoothly without any major challenges.

She, however, pointed out the large number of candidates vying for the same positions, saying it would be ideal for aspirants to reconcile among themselves before facing the vetting panel.

She further emphasized the need for political maturity, urging candidates to avoid mudslinging and personal attacks if reconciliation fails, as all aspirants remain part of the NUP family.

On the second day of the vetting process, the committee reviewed candidates from Kampala City, the Acholi sub-region, and the Ankole region.

Among those vetted were the party’s Secretary General, David Lewis Lubongoya, who is contesting for the Kampala Central MP seat.

Also vetted were Hon. Shamim Malende and Zahara Luyirika, both eyeing the Kampala Woman MP seat, as well as Hajji Nganda Kasirye Mulyanyama and Hamis Kaluba, who are competing for the Makindye East parliamentary seat.

Lubongoya used the occasion to appeal to the people of Kampala Central to support his candidacy, promising improved service delivery and strong representation if elected.

The vetting process is scheduled to continue throughout the week, covering various regions across the country as NUP prepares to field candidates for upcoming national elections.

Chemutia reiterated the party’s commitment to transparency, unity, and discipline as it moves forward with the internal selection process.
