Government to Upgrade Naguru Hospital into Specialized Trauma Center

Naguru Hospital

The Ministry of Health has unveiled plans to upgrade the China-Uganda Friendship Hospital in Naguru into a specialized trauma center, as part of a broader initiative to enhance emergency and specialized healthcare services across the country.

Speaking during a community dialogue earlier today, Dr. Diana Atwine, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, confirmed that the government is working closely with the Chinese government to implement the Naguru Hospital Expansion Project.

She also revealed that discussions are underway to secure additional land to facilitate the hospital’s transformation.

In a related development, Dr. Atwine announced that the government intends to elevate Kiswa and Kisenyi Health Centers, both managed by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), to full hospital status by next year.

This move is in response to a consistent surge in patient numbers at the two urban health facilities.

Dr. Irene Nayiga, Senior Executive Consultant at Naguru Hospital highlighted the increasing demand, noting that outpatient visits have jumped from 30,000 to 50,000 per quarter.

These proposed upgrades are part of a strategic effort by the Ministry of Health to decongest national referral hospitals and improve access to quality healthcare at the community level, particularly in urban areas where patient loads continue to rise.
