National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro and aspiring Kampala Woman Lord Councilor Sauda Madada appeared today (Wednesday) before the Kanyanya Chief Magistrates Court, where they were formally added to a case involving nine other NUP members facing charges of conducting unlawful military drills.
Mufumbiro, who had been violently abducted on Monday and forced into silver Toyota Noah (registration UAK 368K) outside the court premises, was initially at the court to support fellow party members accused of staging military-style drills at NUP headquarters in Makerere-Kavule on February 12, 2025.
Sauda Madada was arrested in Busia yesterday as she attempted to cross into Kenya, and was subsequently brought to Kampala to face similar charges.
The prosecution alleges that the group, now including Mufumbiro and Madada, conducted military drills on September 12, 2025, at the NUP party offices without authorization from the Minister of Defence.
In Wednesday’s court session, NUP lawyers led by Counsel Alex Luganda filed a bail application for the accused.
Luganda argued that both Mufumbiro and Madada are political aspirants in the upcoming 2026 general elections, with nomination deadlines and campaign activities fast approaching. He emphasized their legal right to participate in the electoral process.
The court was also informed that Mufumbiro’s wife is battling cancer at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mulago, and he is her primary caregiver.
According to his legal team, Mufumbiro is responsible for paying weekly medical bills amounting to UGX 5 million.
Despite presenting sureties, the State opposed the bail application, requesting more time to verify the defence submissions and the identities of the sureties.
The Chief Magistrate adjourned the matter to September 29, 2025, when the State is expected to formally respond to the bail application.
