Electoral Commission (EC) Chairman, Justice Simon Byabakama, has called on the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda to advise religious institutions to suspend fundraising activities during the ongoing political season.
Speaking at the EC headquarters in Kampala, Justice Byabakama warned that such events often create opportunities for political candidates to make financial contributions, an act that violates electoral laws.
“These fundraising activities, while well-intentioned, tend to invite illegal campaign donations from aspiring candidates,” he stated. “We urge religious leaders to support efforts to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.”
He commended the Inter-Religious Council for its continued partnership in tackling the growing challenge of monetized politics and urged all stakeholders to join hands in promoting clean campaigns.
Justice Byabakama also revealed that the Commission has received 15 complaints concerning the recent LC5 councillor nominations.
He reminded all nominated candidates to respect the electoral calendar and refrain from early campaigning.
The official campaign period begins on November 10, 2025.
“We want to ensure a peaceful and orderly election. Any acts that breach the guidelines will be dealt with firmly,” he emphasized.
