Over 140 Suspects Arrested in Kampala Police Crackdown on Urban Crime

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango

More than 140 suspects were arrested in a series of police operations across Kampala on September 3, 2025, as part of a renewed crackdown on urban crime.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, the Uganda Police Force launched the second phase of an intelligence-led operation code-named “Fukuza Kawenja” at around 11 p.m., targeting known crime hotspots within the Central Business District (CBD).

The nighttime operation, which focused on youth gangs involved in theft and violent assaults, resulted in the arrest of 110 suspects, all of whom are being held at the Central Police Station in Kampala. They are expected to be arraigned in court soon.

In a separate but coordinated effort earlier that day, the Kawempe Police Division conducted another intelligence-driven operation between 4p.m and 7p.m. in areas including Mpererwe, Kanyanya, Ttula, and Kidokolo.

This sweep was in response to public complaints about street robberies and phone snatching.

It led to the arrest of 32 additional suspects, and police confirmed the recovery of marijuana and other narcotics during the operation.

SSP Onyango described both operations as successful and warned that similar intelligence-led crackdowns will continue as part of ongoing efforts to rid the city of criminal elements.
