Strong Opposition Turnout, Marks First Day of Local Government Nominations in Kampala

Godfrey Luyombya, NUP flag bearer for Nakawa West

The first day of nominations for local government positions at the Electoral Commission offices in Kampala saw a significant turnout of opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearers contesting for the LC5 elective positions.

Candidates from other political parties, including the NRM, Democratic Party (DP), as well as independent aspirants, also participated.

Additionally, representatives from special interest groups such as workers and elders made their appearances during the initial day of the nomination exercise.

Godfrey Luyombya, NUP flag bearer for Nakawa West, highlighted his commitment to combating double taxation on property owners and advancing decentralization efforts.

Meanwhile, Richard Ssembatya, the incumbent councilor for Makindye West 4 who lost the NUP ticket, is now running as an independent candidate, with a key focus on improving garbage collection services.

Despite the vibrant participation, aspirants have expressed concerns regarding the nomination process, particularly about the burden of paying double nomination fees through URA and KCCA, as well as delays caused by a lengthy verification process leading to extended waiting times.

The nomination exercise is ongoing, with many aspirants still awaiting their turn despite the official 5 pm deadline for the first day’s closure.
