The Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development has suspended the Land Fund, a program designed to facilitate the buyout of absentee landlords across Uganda.
Minister for Lands, Judith Nabakooba, disclosed this to the Parliamentary Lands Committee, chaired by Buyamba County MP Gwevira Ssemwanga, following concerns raised by officials from the Uganda Land Commission.
The officials had informed the committee that despite their sustained efforts, the Land Fund has not yet been operationalized.
The Uganda Land Commission has been advocating for the activation of the Land Fund to provide loans to lawful occupants, enabling them to acquire registrable interests in line with constitutional provisions.
However, Minister Nabakooba clarified that the government has suspended special funds, including the Land Fund.
She added that should the need arise, such a fund would be integrated into the Ministry’s main budget rather than maintained as a standalone entity.
