The Chief Executive Officer of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), Rosemary Kisembo, has assured Members of Parliament on the Committee of Commissions, Statutory Authorities, and State Enterprises (COSASE) that the registration of Ugandans living in the Diaspora for national identity cards will be completed by the end of October this year.
Kisembo gave the assurance while responding to concerns raised by the committee over delays in the Diaspora registration exercise, despite funds being allocated in the 2023–2024 financial year.
Citing the Auditor General’s report, MPs expressed concern over the slow pace of the exercise and demanded an update on its current status.
In her response, Kisembo confirmed that the registration process is ongoing and provided a list of countries where the exercise is actively taking place.
She noted that over 2,000 Ugandans have already been registered in Qatar and that registration has been completed across East African countries.
