The Traffic Police have issued strict new guidelines to schools and institutions organizing educational tours, following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of two pupils last week in Mityana District.
The accident occurred in Zigoti Town Council and involved a bus carrying 90 pupils from Daystar Junior School in Makindye.
The vehicle, registered as UAP 829U and belonging to HMK, veered off the road and rolled several times while returning from a school excursion.
Multiple injuries were reported in addition to the two fatalities.
In response, the Traffic Police have introduced measures aimed at improving safety during school trips.
These include discouraging late return journeys and requiring all vehicles used for such excursions to undergo mechanical inspection by the police’s Inspection of Vehicles (IOV) department.
Traffic Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kananura confirmed that the bus driver was arrested and is currently awaiting formal charges.
He criticized the negligence that often accompanies school trip planning and stressed that institutions must take full responsibility for ensuring the safety of children while in transit.
Kananura warned that schools must exercise the highest level of care and diligence when organizing student transport, adding that failure to follow the new safety directives could result in serious legal consequences.
The police reiterated their commitment to enforcing these measures to protect the lives of school-going children and prevent future tragedies.
