Members of Parliament have paid tribute to the late Mary Karooro Okurut, remembering her as a passionate writer, respected educationist, and committed public servant.
Okurut, who served as Minister and District Woman MP for Bushenyi, passed away yesterday evening at the age of 71.
The Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth, praised her dedication to public service and her outstanding contributions to Uganda’s literary heritage.
He highlighted her unblemished record in leadership and noted that the country would miss her deeply.
Tororo District Woman MP Sarah Opendi described Okurut as a close friend and a tireless advocate for the rights of the girl child.
Former Minister of Energy and current Bulambuli District Woman MP, Irene Muloni, referred to Okurut as a loving and supportive family friend.
She spoke warmly of Okurut’s kindness and generosity.
Mary Karooro Okurut was also widely known for her literary work.
As a founding member of the Uganda Women Writers Association (FEMRITE), she played a key role in promoting women’s voices in literature.
Arrangements for her burial are yet to be announced.
