The leadership of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has issued a stern warning to candidates contesting for positions on the Central Executive Committee (CEC), urging them to refrain from misconduct, verbal attacks, and electoral malpractices.
This comes ahead of the highly anticipated NRM Delegates Conference, scheduled for August 27–28, 2025.
The warning was delivered during a meeting convened by the NRM Electoral Commission, following rising tensions on the campaign trail, with some candidates reportedly engaging in personal attacks and trading insults.
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong expressed disappointment over the conduct of some aspirants and called for civility and maturity in their campaigns.
“Candidates must uphold the values of the party by avoiding abusive language, voter bribery, and other forms of electoral malpractice. We expect responsible and respectful campaigns,” Todwong stated.
First National Vice Chairperson Alhajji Moses Kigongo echoed the call for discipline and unity, emphasizing the party’s long-standing legacy and commitment to cohesion.
Concerns were raised by some aspirants regarding the integrity of the electoral process, particularly over the involvement of Dr. Tanga Odoi, chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, whose son, Colline Tanga, is among the candidates vying for a CEC position.
Shadrack Nzeire Kaguta, younger brother to party chairman and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is contesting for NRM Vice Chairperson for Western Uganda, appealed for protection from the party leadership, claiming that some individuals are using his familial ties to undermine his candidacy.
In response, Dr. Tanga Odoi and Secretary General Todwong reassured candidates of a fair and impartial electoral process.
They emphasized that the elections would be conducted using the NRM’s established method of voting lining up behind candidates ensuring transparency and equal opportunity for all.
The outcome of the Delegates Conference is expected to significantly influence the strategic direction of the NRM as the party positions itself ahead of the 2026 general elections.
