The Government of Uganda has allocated one billion shillings to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) to support the promotion of the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN), which officially kicks off on August 2nd.
This was announced by the State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, while addressing Parliament on the government’s efforts to support the Uganda Cranes, who are set to represent the country in the tournament.
During Tuesday’s parliamentary session, MPs pressed Minister Ogwang on why the government had failed to adequately publicize CHAN preparations, leaving many Ugandans unaware of the tournament’s significance and Uganda’s hosting responsibilities.
Uganda’s opening match will be played on August 4th against Algeria at the newly renovated Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
In response, Minister Ogwang explained that the initial responsibility for promoting the tournament lay with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the continent’s football governing body.
However, due to urgent concerns raised by stakeholders, the government stepped in and provided FUFA with the necessary funding to boost promotional efforts.
Meanwhile, the Shadow Minister for Sports, Hon. Kayemba Solo, welcomed the financial support but criticized its delayed release, pointing out that the funds were provided just days before the tournament begins.
He urged the government to improve its planning and coordination for future events, particularly as Uganda prepares to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
