The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Justice Simon Byabakama, is optimistic that the nomination of presidential candidates for the 2026 general elections will take place at the Commission’s new headquarters in Lweza, Bwebajja, located in Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new EC offices, Justice Byabakama said that if construction and equipment installation proceed on schedule, the venue will also host the national tally center and the announcement of the 2026 presidential election results.
The nomination of presidential candidates is scheduled for September 23–24, 2025.
The presidential election results are expected to be announced between January and February 2026.
Justice Byabakama noted that the state-of-the-art complex is projected to cost close to 200 billion shillings.
He appealed to the government to ensure timely release of the required funds to support the project.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who officiated as the guest of honor at the ceremony, pledged the government’s full commitment to funding the construction.
She assured the Electoral Commission that all necessary resources would be provided promptly to meet deadlines.
Kenneth Kaijuka, Chief Executive Officer of the National Housing and Construction Company, which is overseeing the project, promised that all required equipment for the nomination process would be in place by the scheduled date, provided the necessary funding is delivered on time.
The construction of the new EC headquarters is expected to be completed within 24 months.
