Prof. George Kanyeihamba buried in Buziga

Professor George William Kanyeihamba, a retired Supreme Court Judge and one of Uganda’s most respected legal minds, has been laid to rest this afternoon at his residence in Buziga, Makindye Division.

The farewell service was led by Former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stanley Ntagali, who described the late judge as a man of principle, courage, and unwavering dedication to justice.

He praised Kanyeihamba’s legacy of truth-telling and his fearless stance on matters of national importance, calling on Ugandans to emulate his commitment to integrity and the rule of law.

Prof. Kanyeihamba passed away on Monday, July 14, 2025, at the age of 85, after weeks of treatment in the Intensive Care Unit at Nakasero Hospital.

Throughout his distinguished career, he was celebrated not only as a constitutional scholar and human rights advocate, but also as a bold voice for legal reform and justice.

A number of dignitaries attended the state funeral, including former Prime Ministers Amama Mbabazi and Ruhakana Rugunda, Acting Principal Judge Jane Kalugga, National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi, and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi, among others.

The ceremony was conducted by clergy from the Kampala Diocese, under the Church of Uganda.

In recognition of his national service, the government accorded Prof. Kanyeihamba an official state funeral, complete with a gun salute by the Uganda Police Force.

Prof. Kanyeihamba leaves behind a profound legacy in constitutional development, jurisprudence, and the defense of human rights.

His passing marks the end of an era in Uganda’s legal and intellectual community.
