Tensions continue to escalate within the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) as party president Jimmy Akena has dismissed three key members of the party’s electoral commission and the Secretary General, citing internal interference and constitutional violations.
Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Akena announced the dismissal of Electoral Commission Vice Chairperson Jack Khalsushi, and Commissioners Emmanuel Magero and Naurune Naukunda, accusing them of overstepping their mandate by interfering in the operations of other departments.
He emphasized that the move was made within the powers vested in him as party president.
In a further shake-up, Akena also confirmed the removal of Secretary General Fred Ebil, on similar grounds.
The dismissals come at a critical time for the party as it gears up for internal elections.
In a related development, Hajji Mahmoud Kazimbiraine, Chairperson of the UPC Electoral Commission, has disqualified Dennis Adim Enap from the party’s presidential race, citing violations of the party’s constitution and election guidelines.
Among the accusations leveled against Enap are his premature claims of being “duly nominated” and falsely asserting that Jimmy Akena had been disqualified from the contest.
The unfolding events reflect deepening internal strife within one of Uganda’s oldest political parties, and raise questions about the integrity and transparency of its electoral process.
Observers are watching closely to see how the party will navigate these divisions as it approaches a crucial period in its political calendar.
