Radical New Bar to pursue legal action for ULS President Ssemakadde’s return

ULS President Isaac Kimaze Ssemakadde

The Radical New Bar (RNB), a faction within the Uganda Law Society (ULS), has vowed to pursue all legal avenues to ensure the return of ULS President Isaac Kimaze Ssemakadde, including through formal court processes.

RNB, a movement initiated by Ssemakadde, promotes open dialogue, transparency, and justice within the legal profession in Uganda.

According to a charge sheet, Ssemakadde is accused of insulting Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo during a function organized by the opposition People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) on November 18, 2024.

It is alleged he referred to her as a “dimwit” and a “shameless careerist.”

On February 14, 2025, Justice Musa Ssekaana then head of the High Court’s Civil Division found Ssemakadde guilty of contempt of court over repeated abusive attacks on judicial officers via social media.

A warrant for his arrest was issued while he was outside the country, and he now faces a two-year prison sentence.

Speaking on behalf of RNB, Head of Ideology Yasi Ssentumbwe, also known as Munagomba, stated that the group is committed to legal redress and has petitioned the High Court to expedite the matter.

He noted that their hearing scheduled for July 10 did not proceed as planned.

Ssentumbwe emphasized that RNB is not focused on upcoming ULS elections, arguing that no credible leadership process can take place without Ssemakadde. “Without him, there is no council to pass resolutions,” he stated.

RNB also disclosed that their activities have been on hold for over eight months due to Ssemakadde’s absence.

They claim that the president was elected to lead the Law Society but has not had the opportunity to fully serve his term.

The group now urges the High Court not to delay the proceedings any further.
