Retired Supreme Court Judge George Kanyeihamba

The Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has expressed its sorrow over the death of retired Supreme Court Justice George Kanyeihamba, who passed away today at Nakasero Hospital.

He had been receiving intensive care there for some time.

Justice Kanyeihamba served at the Supreme Court from 1997 until his retirement in November 2009.

Prior to that, he held significant roles in government, including Minister of Commerce, Minister of Justice, and Attorney General.

Later, he became a vocal critic of President Museveni’s government, particularly on constitutional matters.

In a press conference held today at the party offices in Najjanankumbi, FDC spokesperson John Kikonyogo extended heartfelt condolences to the family and the nation for the loss of Professor George Kanyeihamba.

Kikonyogo described him as a constitutional law expert who made a significant contribution to Uganda’s constitutional development.

Justice Kanyeihamba was one of three Supreme Court justices who ruled that the 2006 re-election of President Museveni was fraudulent and should be nullified.

Justice Kanyeihamba, aged 85, passed away earlier today, Monday, July 14, 2025, at Nakasero Hospital.

He was cared for by a small group of people, including his adopted daughter Betty Nabitosi, Arnold Anthony Mukose, and Norman Tumuhimbise.

Tumuhimbise stated that they are awaiting direction from government authorities and Kanyeihamba’s close confidant, former Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, who is expected to provide guidance on the next steps, including funeral arrangements.

A harmonization meeting involving the family, close friends and government representatives is scheduled for 4:00 pm today at Kanyeihamba’s home in Buziga to discuss burial arrangements.
