The Uganda Bankers Association (UBA), in collaboration with key stakeholders in the banking sector, has urged the government to review its tax policy on outward remittances, particularly those sent by Ugandans working abroad.
The appeal comes ahead of the 8th Annual Bankers Conference, scheduled for July 29th at the Kampala Serena Hotel, under the theme: “Harnessing the Potential and Maximizing the Impact of Remittances on Development.”
The conference will convene a diverse range of stakeholders including labor export agencies, policymakers, legislators, and financial institutions with the aim of promoting thought leadership and crafting actionable strategies to leverage remittances as a catalyst for Uganda’s sustainable socio-economic growth.
Speaking to the media at PostBank offices in the Kingdom Kampala building, UBA Executive Director Wilbrod Owor revealed that more than 110,000 Ugandans seek employment abroad each year helping to ease the country’s unemployment burden.
Owor expressed concern over the potential negative impact of taxing remittances, warning that it could discourage inflows.
He added that the upcoming conference will explore policy incentives to attract more remittances and ensure they are effectively directed toward national development.
