President Museveni welcomes Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni this morning welcomed Herbert Mensah, the President of Rugby Africa, and his delegation to Uganda, praising rugby as a powerful force for unity, fitness, and social transformation.

Speaking during a high-level meeting at State Lodge, Nakasero, and President Museveni expressed his deep appreciation for Uganda’s inclusion in the prestigious Webb Ellis Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour.

He also commended the decision to have Uganda host the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, which will serve as a qualifying tournament for the Rugby World Cup.

The President underscored rugby’s unique impact, noting that it instills national discipline and promotes cooperation.

“Rugby, unlike some other sports, captures different elements of purpose. It improves physical activity and fitness, but more importantly, it builds teamwork a spirit most countries, and especially Uganda, need. It fosters unity and shared purpose,” he said.

Reflecting on the global influence of sports, Museveni also touched on the cultural role of countries like Britain in the post-Brexit era, emphasizing the unifying potential of international competitions.

He further praised Uganda’s female athletes for their achievements, saying, “They’ve carried the flag with dignity.”

In response, Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah thanked President Museveni for his visionary leadership and support for sports development.

He acknowledged Uganda’s transformation into a continental sports force, attributing it to strong leadership and commitment to grassroots development.
