FDC threatens legal action over academic verification directive

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has announced it will seek legal action if the Electoral Commission does not withdraw its recent directive on academic document verification.

This was revealed by the party’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, Boniface Toterebuka Bamwenda, during a press briefing at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi.

Bamwenda criticized the directive issued by Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, which requires all candidates to verify their academic documents.

He argued that this contradicts Section 5 of the Parliamentary Elections Act (2005, as amended), which clearly states that Ugandans who attained their O-Level and A-Level qualifications within the country are not required to undergo further verification through the National Council for Higher Education or the Uganda National Examinations Board.

He said the party is committed to pursuing legal redress should the directive remain in place.

Meanwhile, the FDC has nominated candidates across various positions ahead of the upcoming elections, with party primaries currently ongoing from July 2nd to 12th.
