The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has suspended joint campaign activities in parts of Ssembabule and Rwampara districts due to escalating tensions and irregularities.
In Ssembabule District, the suspension specifically affects Lwemiyaga County and Mawogola East, following growing safety concerns among candidates.
According to Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, the decision was reached after a meeting with local leaders and candidates, where fears over personal security and campaign disruptions were raised.
The situation in Lwemiyaga escalated after a violent incident in which a supporter of incumbent MP Theodore Ssekikubo was allegedly killed by UPDF soldiers attached to his political rival, Emmanuel Rwashande.
In Rwampara District, joint campaigns were suspended over the concealment of party registration books, which undermines transparency in the electoral process.
The Commission has also suspended similar activities in Budibugyo District for related concerns.
Dr. Odoi warned NRM party chairpersons at all levels against interfering with the electoral process, stressing that their role is not to manipulate or influence the elections.
