The Electoral Commission of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially released the requirements for individuals seeking to contest for the positions of party national chairperson and presidential flag bearer ahead of the upcoming party primaries.
While addressing journalists at the NRM Electoral Commission offices in Kampala, Dr. Tanga Odoi, the commission’s chairperson, urged all interested candidates to pick nomination forms and begin the application process without delay.
According to Dr. Odoi, aspirants must collect at least 100 endorsement signatures from across all regions of the country.
Additionally, each candidate is required to pay a non-refundable fee of Shs20 million per position contested.
The completed forms must be submitted by Friday, July 4, before 5:00 PM for nomination.
After submission, successful aspirants will face vetting by the Central Executive Committee (CEC), the party’s top decision-making organ.
Dr. Odoi emphasized the need for discipline and adherence to party regulations throughout the process, stating that the vetting will ensure that only credible and committed candidates proceed to the next stages.
Notably, incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who currently holds both the chairperson and presidential flag bearer positions, picked nomination forms last Saturday, signaling his intent to run for re-election within the party.
However, the process faced early hiccups when two aspiring candidates Briton Kiwanuka and Julius Tumuhimbise were turned away from the party headquarters on Monday due to the unavailability of expression of interest forms at the time.
Kiwanuka is seeking to contest for the party chairperson seat, while Tumuhimbise is eyeing the presidential flag bearer slot.
The NRM Electoral Commission is expected to release the final list of nominated and vetted candidates later in July.
