The Police Flying Squad in Uganda’s Albertine region has arrested three suspected cattle thieves believed to be part of a larger criminal syndicate targeting livestock farmers.
The suspects, whose identities have been withheld, were apprehended on Wednesday in Butema village, Buhanika sub-county, Hoima District.
They are accused of raiding Kasongoire village in Masindi District last week, where they allegedly stole two cows from a local farmer.
A report filed at Masindi Central Police Station prompted investigations, leading to the suspects being tracked and arrested.
The two stolen cows were also recovered during the operation.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, confirmed the arrests and said the suspects are cooperating with detectives.
He revealed that the three individuals have long been on the police’s most wanted list for their role in a string of livestock thefts across the region.
Hakiza noted that the suspects often collaborate with accomplices in other districts including Wakiso, Mukono, Gulu, Nakasongola, Kampala, and Masaka, where the stolen animals are transported and sold.
The Albertine region, particularly the districts of Masindi, Hoima, Kikuube, and Buliisa, has seen a sharp rise in cattle thefts in recent months.
In response to growing concerns, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni last week directed the Albertine Regional Police Commander (RPC) to initiate a special investigation into the rampant cattle thefts during his visit to Kikuube District.
