The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has issued a stern warning to its members, cautioning them against contesting as independent candidates in the upcoming elections without a party endorsement.
Speaking to journalists at the party headquarters, UPC spokesperson Muzeyi Faizo emphasized that any member who defies the party by running as an independent after losing in the party primaries will face expulsion.
He cited Article 3, Section 6 of the party constitution, which prohibits members from contesting elections outside of the party’s framework.
Muzeyi urged members to accept the results of the primaries and rally behind the official party flag bearers.
He noted that in previous elections, the party lost several elective positions due to members who, after failing to secure the UPC ticket, either ran as independents or supported rival candidates actions that weakened the party’s overall performance.
UPC has also released its roadmap for the upcoming primaries.
The nomination process for interested candidates for the positions of district chairperson and city mayor will begin on 10th July 2025.
Nominations for constituency and district/city woman MPs will run from 10th to 15th July 2025, with the primaries scheduled to take place from 8th to 10th August 2025, among other dates.
