The Executive Director of the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), Dr. Barirega Akankwasa, has reiterated the urgent need to phase out single-use plastics, describing them as harmful to environmental sustainability.
Speaking during Uganda’s national celebrations for World Environment Day held in Kabale, Dr. Akankwasa stated that while completely eliminating plastics may not be feasible, specific categories for which alternatives exist should be systematically phased out.
The 2025 celebrations were held under the theme United Against Plastic Pollution, aligning with global efforts to combat plastic waste.
Dr. Akankwasa noted ongoing international negotiations aimed at establishing a legally binding treaty to address plastic pollution, including the removal of hazardous chemicals from plastic products.
He also acknowledged growing public concern over the environmental and health effects of poorly managed plastic waste.
Uncollected plastics continue to clog drainage systems, pollute lakes and rivers, and contribute to ecosystem degradation across the country.
