Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission, has welcomed the decision by Mawogola North Member of Parliament (MP) Shatsi Musherure Kutesa to withdraw from the upcoming party primaries for the same seat.
Dr. Odoi noted that Musherure’s decision reflects a mature and independent stance, appreciated by many who are committed to promoting peace and development in Ssembabule District, a region known for its previously contentious electoral contests.
In 2021, Musherure contested against Godfrey Sodo Kaguta, a brother to President Yoweri Museveni, in a primary election that was marred by tensions and physical confrontations.
The situation escalated to a point where the intervention of senior figures, including President Museveni and former Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa, was required to restore order between the candidates and their supporters.
Upon stepping down, Musherure called on her supporters to remain calm and continue supporting development initiatives in the area.
In a related development, Dr. Odoi has urged for calm among NRM supporters in Tororo District amid discussions surrounding the potential creation of three new administrative units.
The Cabinet is expected to pronounce itself on the matter, and if approved, individuals interested in contesting for leadership in the new units will be given a special nomination window.
This development follows President Museveni’s promise during a visit to Tororo in April to create the new units as a measure to address ongoing ethnic tensions in the district.
