The Makindye Chief Magistrates Court has remanded Superintendent of Police (SP) Avito Begira on charges of theft involving construction materials, including two spades and several other items.
Begira, a Human Resource Officer attached to Wamala Region and a resident of Lunya Zone in Makindye Ssabagabo, Wakiso District, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Igga Adiru and was charged with a single count of theft.
According to the prosecution, the alleged theft took place on February 10, 2023, at Kanaaba Zone in Makindye Ssabagabo.
Begira is accused of stealing 380 iron sheets, 250 poles, 15 bags of cement, a gate, 20 kilograms of nails, two spades, two hammers, and two pit saws all valued at Shs16,615,000.
The property is said to belong to a man identified as Kato Bumali.
Begira denied the charges and was remanded to prison until June 19, 2025, as investigations continue.
His arrest was carried out by fellow police officers in collaboration with detectives from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, led by Brigadier Henry Isoke.
The arrest followed a formal complaint lodged by Kato, the alleged victim.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that Begira and Kato were involved in an ongoing land dispute in Ndejje.
It is alleged that after Kato delivered building materials to the contested site, Begira enlisted the help of unidentified individuals and some police officers to remove the materials.
A statement from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit confirmed that Begira had been summoned multiple times by his superiors to respond to the allegations but failed to appear, leading to his arrest.
