Ministry of Health urges Parliament to regulate alcohol advertising and promote mental health integration

Dr. Hafsa Lukwata, Assistant Commissioner for Mental Health and Substance Control

The Ministry of Health has called on Parliament to enact laws and regulations controlling the advertisement and sale of alcohol across the country.

Dr. Hafsa Lukwata, Assistant Commissioner for Mental Health and Substance Control at the Ministry, stressed the urgent need to curb the increasing prevalence of alcohol advertising, which she described as exceeding acceptable limits.

She explained that such advertisements encourage young people to consume alcohol despite the significant health risks involved.

Dr. Lukwata also proposed stronger regulation of minors’ access to alcohol, recommending that shops be categorized based on their eligibility to sell alcohol and those specific consumption hours is regulated.

Additionally, she highlighted the importance of integrating mental health into all government programs, including the Parish Development Model, Entandikwa, and other national development initiatives, to build a mentally resilient population.

Dr. Lukwata further recommended that schools incorporate mental health education into their curricula and create safe, supportive environments for learners.

The Ministry of Education has directed all schools to allocate at least one hour per week for mental health activities. While many schools have yet to implement this directive, the Ministry urges full compliance moving forward.
