Minister Muyingo still uncertain about contesting Bamunanika seat in 2026 elections

State Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo

The State Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, has stated that he has not yet decided whether to contest for the Bamunanika County parliamentary seat in the 2026 general elections.

Muyingo previously represented Bamunanika County in Luwero District from 2011 to 2021 but lost the seat to his former aide, Robert Sekitoleeko, of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Despite the defeat, Muyingo has maintained significant influence in the constituency, particularly through the Bamunanika Constituency Education Fund, which supports thousands of learners across both local and national schools.

He has also continued making donations to various associations, churches, schools, and health centers.

In recent months, Muyingo and his supporters have reportedly been working to rally backing for his potential return in 2026.

However, in a recent interview, he confirmed that he has neither picked up nor submitted expression of interest forms for the NRM primaries.

“I have not yet made a final decision,” Muyingo said. “Earlier, I consulted with President Yoweri Museveni, who advised me to focus on my responsibilities at the Education Ministry. However, I am still consulting with other stakeholders to decide whether to contest or not. The window for expressing interest remains open until June 15, 2025, so it’s too early to say I won’t contest.”

On Sunday, Muyingo reportedly met with some of his aides at his home in Kakoola village, Luwero, and informed them of his decision not to contest, at least for now. His announcement has sparked mixed reactions among Bamunanika County leaders and residents. Some argue that he has served long enough, while others are still hopeful for his return.
