Stranded Pilgrims finally transported home after Uganda Martyrs’ day celebrations

Stranded Pilgrims finally transported home

The last group of stranded pilgrims has been transported by bus to their destinations, primarily in Western Uganda, following the 2025 Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Namugongo.

Catholic Martyrs Shrine Administrator Fr. Francis Muwonge confirmed that over 2,000 pilgrims remained at the site after the June 3rd events. Many had no transport or basic necessities.

Some lost money and belongings to theft, while others arrived without a return plan, relying on support from well-wishers or the shrine administration.

Each year, the shrine spends approximately UGX 3.5 million to assist stranded pilgrims with transport.

Fr. Muwonge emphasized the need for better planning and coordination to avoid similar situations in future celebrations.

Efforts are underway to collaborate with security teams to identify those with prior transport arrangements and assess those genuinely in need of help.

Transport options, including buses and taxis, were arranged for those unable to return on their own.

This year’s event saw a record-breaking turnout, with large groups of pilgrims arriving from Tororo and Gulu provinces.

The animating diocese of Lugazi mobilized nearly 5,000 pilgrims, many of whom made the journey to Namugongo on foot.

Fr. Muwonge urged future pilgrims to plan adequately and make proper travel arrangements to ensure a smooth and safe pilgrimage experience.
