Six children dead after eating suspected poisonous mushrooms in Kotido

Mushrooms kills six in Kotido

At least six children have died and several others are hospitalized after allegedly consuming suspected poisonous mushrooms in Naputir Village, Loletio Sub County, Kotido District.

The victims, mostly between three and eight years old, reportedly ate wild mushrooms while unsupervised.

The incident occurred on Sunday when the children were left alone at home as their parents attended a wedding in Rengen Sub County.

Francis Aldon Lotoo, a member of the Village Health Team in Naputir, explained that the children went into the bush searching for food and consumed the mushrooms they found.

Soon after eating the mushrooms, the children began vomiting and experiencing diarrhea.

They were rushed to Panyangara Health Centre III, where one child died on arrival.

The situation worsened as more children developed similar symptoms, and by Tuesday, six children had died.

Health officials are monitoring the survivors and investigating the type of mushroom consumed.

Local authorities are also conducting awareness campaigns to warn communities against eating unidentified wild plants and mushrooms.
