Govt disburses UGX 4.2 billion for 2025 Namugongo Martyrs Day Celebrations

Minister of State for Tourism, Hon. Martin Bahinduka Mugarra

The Government of Uganda has fully disbursed UGX 4.2 billion to support preparations for the 2025 Namugongo Martyrs Day celebrations, a significant event on the country’s religious and cultural calendar.

This annual celebration honors the sacrifice of the Ugandan martyrs who were executed for their Christian faith in the late 19th century.

Speaking to journalists at the Uganda Media Centre, the Minister of State for Tourism, Hon. Martin Bahinduka Mugarra, revealed that UGX 2 billion was allocated to both the Catholic and Anglican churches respectively, while UGX 200 million was given to the Muslim community.

These funds will assist with logistics, security, and the organization of events at the Namugongo sites and various dioceses across the country.

Hon. Mugarra highlighted the importance of the Martyrs Day celebrations beyond religious observance, noting that the government aims to develop Namugongo and other martyr sites into world-class pilgrimage and tourism destinations.

This initiative is part of a wider effort to promote faith-based tourism, which plays a key role in Uganda’s tourism industry and economic growth.

He also called on all involved parties to ensure that the celebrations are peaceful, inclusive, and respect the solemn nature of the event.

Meanwhile, Dr. Augustine Kato, Vice Chairperson of the Organizing Committee for Lugazi Diocese, praised the government for honoring its financial commitment in good time.

He assured the Catholic community that Lugazi Diocese is prepared to host a colorful and meaningful celebration on June 3rd.

The theme for this year’s event, Oh Lord, Let Me See Again; I, Your Pilgrim of Hope, reflect the spiritual renewal and hope that the martyrs continue to inspire among the faithful.

The Martyrs Day celebrations are expected to draw thousands of pilgrims from Uganda and neighboring countries.

The main event takes place at the Namugongo Shrine, the site where 22 Catholic and Anglican converts were burned alive between 1885 and 1887 for refusing to renounce their faith during the reign of King Mwanga II.
