Hundreds of children, pupils, and students made a pilgrimage to the Catholic Shrine in Namugongo as part of the preparations for this year’s National Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations scheduled for June 3rd.
By as early as 7:00 a.m, buses carrying young pilgrims had already started arriving at Namugongo, giving the children an opportunity to experience the spiritual atmosphere of the Uganda Martyrs’ land.
They later participated in a Eucharistic Mass led by Rt. Rev. Bishop Christopher Kakooza.
As part of the continuing events, youths will on Saturday participate in the Walk of Faith, beginning from the Munyonyo Minor Basilica to Old Kampala Parish.
This symbolic journey offers a moment of reflection on the path taken by the Uganda Martyrs on their way to martyrdom.
This year’s Martyrs Day celebrations are being led by Lugazi Diocese, under the theme: “Oh Lord, Let Me See Again – I, Your Pilgrim of Hope,”which is inspired by the Jubilee Year declared by the late Pope Francis.
Later today, the Holy Martyrs Choir Namugongo will present a special performance titled the “Uganda Martyrs Recitals” at Imperial Hotel in Kampala.
The event, which aims to promote devotion to the Uganda Martyrs through music, is expected to be graced by His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, Archbishop of Kampala, and Vice President Jessica Alupo.
Meanwhile, foot pilgrims from across the country continue their journey toward Namugongo.
A group of over 1,000 pilgrims from Masaka Diocese has reached Katende, while another group of similar size from Mubendeis now approaching Buloba.
