Church of Uganda finalizes preparations for martyrs day celebrations at Namugongo

Church of Uganda to welcome 975 pilgrims from Northern Uganda

The Church of Uganda is preparing to receive 975 foot pilgrims from Northern Uganda this Sunday at the Namugongo Anglican Martyrs site, ahead of the annual Martyrs Day celebrations scheduled for Tuesday.

The pilgrims, who come from six dioceses in the Northern Uganda Cluster organizing this year’s event, have spent eleven demanding days trekking over 400 kilometers to Namugongo.

As of earlier today, they had reached Matugga in Wakiso District.

Addressing journalists at the Anglican Museum in Namugongo, Rt. Rev. Godfrey Loum, Bishop of Northern Uganda and Chairperson of the organizing cluster, confirmed that preparations are well underway to receive the pilgrims and host the celebrations under the theme: “Imitating God by doing good.”

Bishop Loum shared details about the service, announcing that former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Most Rev. Henry Luke Orombi, will serve as the main celebrant.

The current Archbishop, Dr. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, will deliver the day’s sermon. President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend the celebrations as the Chief Guest.

Musically, the day will be marked by a powerful worship experience, with a mass choir of approximately 400 members.

This will include 100 singers from Namugongo and 300 from the Northern Uganda Cluster.

Despite the extensive preparations, Bishop Loum expressed concern over delayed financial support from the government.

He called on authorities to fulfill their pledge, noting that the event’s budget stands at UGX 2.2 billion.
